Why your lead also went to four other businesses

A marketplace lead is not an inquiry addressed to you. It is an inquiry the platform sells to several businesses in your category, usually at the same moment, each of whom pays for it separately.

The platform is paid per contractor, not per job

The economics follow from that. A request that reaches one contractor earns the platform one lead fee; the same request reaching five earns five. Sharing is not a flaw in the model, it is the model.

This is not a scandal and it is usually disclosed. But it explains behaviour that otherwise looks unfair: why a lead can feel low-quality, why the customer sometimes seems surprised to hear from you, and why being thorough is worth less than being early.

What the customer experiences

They submit one form and then their phone starts going. Depending on the platform and category, several businesses reach out within the hour — or one does, days later.

From where they sit, the first competent reply is the conversation. Everyone after that is interrupting something that already started. The customer is not comparing five quotes; they are talking to one business and ignoring four notifications.

What it changes about answering

It moves the decision earlier than most contractors assume. The job is often effectively decided before anyone has quoted a price, because the customer stopped reading after the first useful response.

It also changes what a good reply is. Against a blank field, a detailed quote wins. Against four competitors, a short specific reply that arrives first wins, and detail comes in the conversation that follows.

Sharing is also why speed compounds

If you answer everything within minutes, you are not merely improving your own close rate — you are consuming the leads before the businesses that answer in hours ever get a turn. The same lead price buys you more jobs than it buys them.

That is the whole argument for response speed on shared marketplaces, and it does not depend on any particular study to hold.
